The Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens Connection to Patrick Matthew

In a gushing review of Darwin's Origin of Species. Charles Dickens's Magazine 'All the Year Round' (1860) quoted a paragraph of Matthew's (1831) original prose yet never cited Matthew as its source. The uncited quote is to be found here.

Darwin and Dickens were members of the exclusive Athenaeum Club, both joined on the same day.

Why not name Matthew as the author of the quote?

Here is the unreferenced quote that Dicken's magazine took form Matthew's On Naval Timber. The first image is from the original by Matthew in On Naval Timber, p388. The second is Dicken's replication of Matthew's words.

From On Naval Timber (1831)

From All the Year Round (1860)

This is just one of many examples of empirical data that underpins "The Patrick Mathew Effect" in science.
