The renowned violinist Richard Smith played The Patrick Matthew Violin (and others) at the Violins With Stories event for Sherwood art week on July 4th 2025. The violin's back, bouts, neck, scroll, pegs tailpiece and end pin were made from an ancient apple tree, most likely planted by Patrick Matthew whose property and renowned apple orchards neighboured the castle, whose owner was his friend. The apple tree fell in the ancient orchard at Megginch Castle in Scotland. Dolomite spruce was used for the violin's table and it has a bass bar made of driftwood found by master violin maker Steve Burnett who made the violin in Edinburgh in Scotland.
